What makes a good business?

On the corner of Hudson Street in Manhattan next to the building where I intern at Comedy Central there is a very popular Starbucks. Everyday I have my internship I get there at least an hour early just so I can take a seat by the big window and watch people walk by. As many times as I've sat here I wondered what exactly it is that makes this Starbucks more popular than most Starbucks locations that I've been to. I came up with a couple of possibilities and the first is that it has a great strategic location. It is conveniently located not only next to a big corporate building, but on a street busy with commuters working in many nearyby big corporate buildings as well. Along with corporate buildings there is also a bank located right next door which makes cash accessible for potential customers. The lighting is perfect, the big window clearly displays what items are being offered as well as the many customers already moving about inside.

Maybe it is a combination of all these things, but for me as a customers it is a specific combination of things. This place drives traffic in general because it looks friendly, warm, and welcoming. No matter how many times I came in here simply to have a place to sit, they would never ask me to leave if I did not buy anything. This factor makes me want to buy something anyway simply because I appreciate their kindness.

They would also never rush me out or give me funny looks. I always feel welcome and relaxed, like I was at home. This place has consistency. Most of all the employees practice a professional attitude with warm greetings and consistently keeping the facilities clean.

The same principle can be applied to self-branding. A consistent warm, friendly personality draws people and more importantly employers to a particular candidate. This friendly personality along with consistent professionalism goes a long way.

Although all of these good qualities are important, none of it is worth anything without genuine quality. Any coffee place can imitate the coffee and other items that Starbucks offers, but without the traditional expert quality expected and recognized by customers, it will never be on the same competing level as Starbucks.

I absolutely love this article! As a PR major seeking new and innovative ways to serve the clients I'm already working with, this article only further proves my opinion on "bigger the better". When I first work with a client I explain to them that I am the type of public relations professional that likes to do "bigger and better" ways to gain publicity because it catches attention. The difference between the negative way people view publicity stunts and what I have in mind is that I believe in positive and creative means of achieving "bigger and better". I love the way Taco Bell creatively used April fools day and a pun on the taco "bell" idea. It made me laugh and want a Chalupa as I was reading this article! lol. No wonder why they made a lot more profit on that day alone. I believe that Taco Bell has the type of food that people crave whenever it comes to mind, so it was definitely a great idea to make people think about Taco Bell by pulling the April Fool's stunt.

About the Author

My name is MilaRose Canullas and I am a senior public relations major with a minor in business. In my spare time I like to work on creative public relations projects for independent groups showcasing local New Jersey music artists. My passion is inspiring individuals to follow their dreams. I have another blog that is still under construction but anyone is more than welcome to check it out and comment. The url is www.buildingdreamsinspired.wordpress.com. Your support is very much appreciated.

I am currently in the process of designing and implementing a business plan for my own public relations company called Building Dreams Public Relations. The idea is to help new artists get a head start on making their vision come true by working with their budget. Hiring a public relations specialist can be very costly and in most cases new artists are on a very tight budget. I would like to create a relationship with my client based on trust and focusing on a longer term relationship rather than just about money.
